The Saunders Family are one of Worterburgh’s darker urban legends, dating back to 18th century and the occultist John Saunders and his wife, who lived in the wilderness, practicing dark magic away from prying eyes. Infamous for murder and mutilation and suspected (rightly, as the case was) of sorcery, they fled into the Border to further pursue their ‘craft’. The basic version of the legend generally end at the part of the Saunders haunting the wilderness outside the city and preying on humans, somehow still alive. Those more well-versed into the supernatural arts know the second part, which is even more disturbing: the Saunders (husband, wife and children) were blood mages who were quite competent in their disturbing craft and had developed rituals and spells built around their blood connection. To strengthen their craft and continue it, they turned to inbreeding. Presumably, if they still exist, then one can assume that if they do kidnap and/or kill people, then they are harvesting them for spare material.
No one really knows if they’re still alive and the border is shifting. And maybe it’s not them that does those things: plenty of weird critters prowling the border. But the Saunders are creepy and extremely elusive and no one has ever seen them up close.
